A fascination with light, and its absence, is an ongoing theme in photographer Rinko Kawauchi’s beguiling photographic practice. “From the black ocean comes the appearance of light and waves,” she has said. “It helps you imagine birth.” I contributed a chapter on the photographer’s work for this publication exploring darkness in photography and film.
